Rating: 5 Stars out of 5 (I'd give this 100 stars if I could. This thing kept me sane), July 20 2004 Ah, what can I say about my Medela Pump in Style Breastpump? My son is about 3-1/2 and it's still sitting in a place of honor no more than three feet from where I am sitting right now. I've had offers for it and I've been told to Ebay it, but I just can't let it go. That pump knows me better than most people. :) I breastfed my son for almost 3 years. I heard it would help lower his risks of developing diabetes or having a weight problem in the future so I went the whole nine yards with it. Breastfeeding can be hard and it can sometimes threaten your sanity. I never made very much milk. I hear that can be common with diabetics. We were always afraid he wasn't getting enough. We started to let dada supplement formula with him. It gave us some peace of mind, but I felt bad giving him just formula. We ended up getting the Medela Pump in Style (MPS) because it promised to be fast and we felt since it was heavy-duty and able to mimic baby suction, that it would probably get the most milk out. I had already tried manual and small electric pumps with no success. They were hard to do, tiring, and took a monumental effort even to get an ounce (which was the most I could ever make while pumping). The MPS was really nice. Everything was contained within the nice-looking bag. The whole unit could sit on a table, chair or desk, and you just had to hold the dual pumps in place, the machine did the rest. It expressed milk quickly and comfortably. We would take the milk I expressed and mix it with formula for dada to give the baby when I wasn't in the mood for breastfeeding. The baby ended up feeling satisfied and we had peace of mind. Plus dada and Bubba got some nice bonding time. When Bubba was about 6 months old I got a nipple thrush infection - something else diabetics can be prone to. It was EXTREMELY painful for bubba to nurse. It felt like he was sucking out ground up glass. It got to where I was almost screaming when he latched on and I had to hold it in and kick or punch a pillow to try to take my mind off the pain. It finally got to the point where I had to stop. I was still producing milk and it had to come out somehow. I wondered if it would hurt to use the pump. I tried it, and it did not hurt very much at all. I was able to keep my milk flowing with the pump. There have been other times when I've been too sore for Bubba to nurse, and I used the pump to express milk for him. The MPS also helped me keep some freedom. I was able to go on weekend trips or outings with my sister (sans hubby and child) and just took the pump along. I knew from the beginning that this one would make it on my recommendations list. If not for this pump, I would not have lasted past 3 months breastfeeding.
