Gestational Diabetes: What to Expect. Back Cover: Gestational diabetes is a rare and little-understood form of diabetes. It only appears in pregnancy and usually disappears afterward, but proper self-care during pregnancy is still crucial. This comprehensive guide for the woman with gestational diabetes explains the proper elements of self-care, including: nutritious meal planning, proper insulin therapy, safe exercise, accurate blood sugar monitoring, more. Other important topics related to gestational diabetes are covered as well, such as the stages of an unborn baby's development, the tests to expect during pregnancy, labor and delivery, and birth control. Gestational Diabetes: What to expect, Fourth Edition, is designed to provide the information a woman with gestational diabetes needs to have a successful pregnancy - one that ends with a happy, healthy baby.

MOMMY'S REVIEW:

Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars, July 2004 This is a book that is very similar to the type 1 booklet, Diabetes and Pregnancy: What to Expect. I have type 2 diabetes, and got to look over this book - but, of course, much of it did not apply to me. This is a small book, about 80 pages. It is laid out very simply and uses easy-to-understand language. It covers a wide range of topics - briefly. It is more of a primer. Some mommies I've talked to have liked the book a lot, saying they appreciated the simple approach and broad overview. They claim it is a valuable part of their library. Other mommies, however, have complained that the book is too elementary and they wanted something with more substance. I personally gravitate towards these books when I am first starting to research a subject. For example, when I was taking college algebra years ago I also purchased elementary and junior high algebra text books. I also had plenty of web sites bookmarked that were aimed at kids. When the class came to a new math topic, I would refer to my "kid stuff" first because it was often laid out in an entertaining and uncomplicated manner. It worked for me - I got one of the few A's in that class. This book I am reviewing is also an excellent starter book and presents the subject of gestational diabetes in an entertaining way while allowing you a broad overview and a frame of reference while tackling more complicated texts later on. Unfortunately, there are not many meaty books out there on gestational diabetes (in my opinion) and gestational diabetics (as well as the rest of us) are left with few choices when it comes to reference books. Of the books available today (July 2004), I liked this one the best as a starter book.
