Managing Your Gestational Diabetes: A Guide for You and Your Baby's Good Health
by Lois Jovanovic-Peterson

Back Cover: Now you can consult one of the country's leading authorities on gestational diabetes. Nationally renowned endocrinologist, Lois Jovanovic-Peterson, M.D., offers a practical approach for controlling gestational diabetes - a temporary form of diabetes that usually begins during the last half of pregnancy and disappears at labor. Teamed with Morton B. Stone, editorial director of Diabetes in the News, she clearly tells you what you need to know to have a safe pregnancy and delivery of a healthy baby.

Written in plain, straightforward language and filled with expert advice, Managing Your Gestational Diabetes answers the most frequently asked questions, including: What does this do to my baby? What should I eat? How do I prevent complications? How can I curb diabetes-related problems such as low blood sugar? How can I prevent diabetes from recurring later in my life? As an added feature, this up-to-date guide includes a comprehensive sample record book to help you monitor your progress and prevent complications.

DIABETIC MOMMY'S REVIEW:

Rating: None yet...July 2004

I am including this book as a "Recommended Book" because of recommendations I've heard from many gestational diabetic members of my web site. To our knowledge today (July 2004), there are not very many books on the subject of gestational diabetes and most of those are very simple and general.

From what I've been told, what makes this book different is two things. 1) It has a handy food section that can be used to create menus and meal plans. 2) It covers a couple topics that other books on gestational diabetes don't. I have heard that it does share brevity and simplicity with the other books currently out there.

I have not had a chance to read this book, (and will update you when I do) but from what I've heard I think it would be a book I would have in my library. If you have read some of my other reviews, you will know that I recommend simpler books as starters in your research on diabetes because they allow you to organize your thoughts, serve as a point of reference, and give a good general overview. So, if you are someone like me, who likes to "look at the city from a high hill to gain her bearings" then this might be a book to consider.

One final thing to consider is that this book is written by Lois Jovanovic-Peterson, M.D., who is the author of other books that are causing a good buzz, namely Medical Management of Pregnancy Complicated by Diabetes. She is also very well qualified - in addition to being a scientist and physician who specializes in diabetes and pregnancy, she also had diabetes and had had two successful pregnancies.
